Worked example
How the tax adds up.
A BTSE position, as your tax office would treat it. These are example figures, not yours; HashBooks uses your own history for those.
Illustrative · United States
| Realised profit on the position | $1,200 |
|---|---|
| Funding paid while it was open | −$80 |
| Net result | $1,120 |
| At a 22% ordinary rate if short-term | $246.40 |
Rates depend on how the contract is treated; check yours with a tax professional. The full example in the help centre.
Illustrative · United Kingdom
| Realised profit on the position | £1,000 |
|---|---|
| Funding paid while it was open | −£60 |
| Net result | £940 |
HashBooks reports the figures in pounds; derivatives can be taxed differently from coins, so have an adviser check them. The full example in the help centre.
Illustrative · India
| Realised profit on the position | ₹80,000 |
|---|---|
| Funding paid while it was open | −₹5,000 |
| Net result | ₹75,000 |
Reported in rupees; how it’s taxed depends on the contract, so check with a CA. The full example in the help centre.

United States · Form 8949
- Selling, swapping or spending what you hold on BTSE. Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a capital gain or loss: short-term at 10–37% if held a year or less, 0, 15 or 20% if held longer. More on BTSE in United States
- Futures and perpetuals on BTSE. Closing a futures or perpetual position realises a gain or loss, and funding you pay or receive moves your result too. HashBooks records both in dollars on the day. More on BTSE in United States
- Rewards and interest from BTSE. Staking rewards, interest and other rewards are ordinary income at their dollar value when received; that value becomes their cost basis. More on BTSE in United States
- Moving coins to or from BTSE. Moving crypto between your own wallets and accounts isn’t taxable. More on BTSE in United States
- Cost basis. Since 1 January 2025 cost basis is tracked per wallet or exchange; HashBooks uses FIFO, lot by lot. More on BTSE in United States

How to connect
Bring BTSE in.
Pick the method that suits you — both land in the same ledger. Stuck? See connecting accounts in the help centre.
- Log in at https://www.btse.com.
- Open the Account menu in the top-right corner.
- Select the API tab.
- Click New API to generate a key and passphrase.
- Keep only the Read permission for the key. Leave Trading and Transfer unticked.
- Save the key and passphrase now. The passphrase is shown only once.
- In HashBooks, choose BTSE under Integrations and paste the key and secret.
- Download your trade, deposit and withdrawal history from BTSE.
- Copy the rows into the HashBooks CSV / Excel template: date, type, what you sent and received, the fee, and any TDS.
- Upload it in HashBooks, check the preview, then confirm. Uploading the same file twice never double-counts.

Good to know
BTSE specifics.
- BTSE’s ledger comes across too, so rewards, interest and other credits paid into the account are recorded as income on the day they arrive.
- The passphrase is shown only once at creation and cannot be retrieved later.
- Read covers account balances, order status, trade history and wallet history. Trading covers placing, amending and cancelling orders. Transfer covers withdrawals, deposits and transfers between wallets.
- The API authentication docs do not describe IP restrictions or key expiry.
- BTSE offers spot, perpetual swaps and dated futures. Closed positions and funding payments are imported alongside spot trades, so the report shows your whole result on the platform.

Questions
BTSE, answered.
Does BTSE report my trades to the tax office?
Reporting depends on where BTSE is regulated and where you live, so don’t rely on it. Your return has to include every sale and swap across all your platforms, which is what HashBooks brings together.
How are BTSE futures and perpetuals taxed?
Closing a position realises a gain or loss, and funding you pay or receive adds to or reduces your result. HashBooks imports both from BTSE and reports them under your country’s rules; the tax section above shows how your country treats them.
Does HashBooks need trading permission on BTSE?
No. Create the BTSE key with read access only and leave trading and withdrawals off. HashBooks has no code that can trade or withdraw, and the key is encrypted with AES-256-GCM and deleted when you disconnect.
How do I get my BTSE transaction history for taxes?
Connect BTSE with a read-only API key and HashBooks pulls the history for you. You can also export a statement from BTSE and upload it with the HashBooks template.
Which HashBooks plan do I need for BTSE?
Connecting BTSE and seeing an estimated tax summary is free for up to 100 transactions across 3 connections. Filing reports for your country start on the Starter plan; see pricing.
Can HashBooks trade or withdraw on BTSE?
No. The key you create is view-only, and HashBooks contains no code that can trade, withdraw or transfer. It’s encrypted with AES-256-GCM and deleted the moment you remove BTSE.
