Worked example
One example, line by line.
Rewards earned on Luno, with the tax shown for the country you picked. The numbers are for illustration only; yours come from your own history.
Illustrative · United States
| Rewards received, at market value | $500 |
|---|---|
| Ordinary income at 22% | $110 |
| Sold later for | $650 |
| Cost basis = value when received | −$500 |
| Capital gain | $150 |
The value when received becomes the cost basis, so it isn’t taxed twice. The full example in the help centre.
Illustrative · United Kingdom
| Rewards received, at market value | £500 |
|---|---|
| Income at your income-tax rate | £500 |
| Sold later for | £650 |
| Cost in the pool = value when received | −£500 |
| Gain for Capital Gains Tax | £150 |
The gain counts towards your £3,000 annual exempt amount. The full example in the help centre.
Illustrative · India
| Rewards received | ₹40,000 |
|---|---|
| Income at your slab rate | ₹40,000 |
| Sold later for | ₹55,000 |
| Cost of acquisition = value when received | −₹40,000 |
| Gain, taxed at 30% plus cess | ₹15,000 |
| Tax on the sale | ₹4,680 |
The later sale is a separate transfer with its own 1% TDS. The full example in the help centre.

Good to know
Luno specifics.
- Luno’s API doesn’t return your deposits and withdrawals. Add them from a statement if they matter for your cost basis.
- Luno’s ledger comes across too, so rewards, interest and other credits paid into the account are recorded as income on the day they arrive.
- HashBooks prepares your report for the country where you file, not where Luno is based, so gains on Luno follow your own country’s rules.
Security
A read-only Luno key, and nothing more.
The Luno key you create can only view. HashBooks has no way to place an order or move funds, stores the key encrypted with AES-256-GCM, and deletes it when you disconnect. How HashBooks keeps data safe.
