Worked example
One example, line by line.
A typical Alpaca sale, with the tax shown for the country you picked. The numbers are for illustration only; yours come from your own history.
Illustrative · United States
| Proceeds | $3,500 |
|---|---|
| Cost basis (FIFO) | −$2,000 |
| Long-term gain | $1,500 |
| Tax at the 15% long-term rate | $225 |
Held a year or less, the same gain would be taxed at your ordinary rate, for example 22%: $330. The full example in the help centre.
Illustrative · United Kingdom
| Net gain | £20,000 |
|---|---|
| Less the annual exempt amount | −£3,000 |
| Taxable gain | £17,000 |
| £10,270 in the basic-rate band × 18% | £1,848.60 |
| Remaining £6,730 × 24% | £1,615.20 |
| Capital Gains Tax | £3,463.80 |
Your salary decides how much of the gain falls in the 18% band. The full example in the help centre.
Illustrative · India
| Sale value | ₹1,50,000 |
|---|---|
| Cost of acquisition | −₹1,00,000 |
| Gain (the ₹500 fee isn’t deductible) | ₹50,000 |
| Tax at 30% | ₹15,000 |
| Cess at 4% | ₹600 |
| Total tax | ₹15,600 |
| Less 1% TDS already deducted | −₹1,500 |
| Balance at filing | ₹14,100 |
A loss on another coin wouldn’t reduce this: VDA losses can’t be set off. The full example in the help centre.

Good to know
Alpaca specifics.
- Alpaca paper trading and live trading use separate domains and separate API keys, so connect the key of the account you actually trade with.
- US customers receive a 1099 tax statement (covering 1099-B, 1099-DIV, 1099-INT and 1099-MISC) and non-US customers receive a 1042-S, for accounts with reportable activity.
- Alpaca issues no 1099-B if no securities were sold in the tax year.

Security
A read-only Alpaca key, and nothing more.
The Alpaca key you create can only view. HashBooks has no way to place an order or move funds, stores the key encrypted with AES-256-GCM, and deletes it when you disconnect. How HashBooks keeps data safe.

Reporting depends on where Alpaca is regulated and where you live, so don’t rely on it. Your return has to include every sale and swap across all your platforms, which is what HashBooks brings together.

How do I get my Alpaca transaction history for taxes?
Connect Alpaca with a read-only API key and HashBooks pulls the history for you. You can also export a statement from Alpaca and upload it with the HashBooks template.
Which HashBooks plan do I need for Alpaca?
Connecting Alpaca and seeing an estimated tax summary is free for up to 100 transactions across 3 connections. Filing reports for your country start on the Starter plan; see pricing.
Can HashBooks trade or withdraw on Alpaca?
No. The key you create is view-only, and HashBooks contains no code that can trade, withdraw or transfer. It’s encrypted with AES-256-GCM and deleted the moment you remove Alpaca.
