Worked example

How the tax adds up.

A Backpack position, as your tax office would treat it. These are example figures, not yours; HashBooks uses your own history for those.

A perpetual closed at a profit

Illustrative · United States

A perpetual closed at a profit, line by line
Realised profit on the position$1,200
Funding paid while it was open−$80
Net result$1,120
At a 22% ordinary rate if short-term$246.40

Rates depend on how the contract is treated; check yours with a tax professional. The full example in the help centre.

A perpetual closed at a profit

Illustrative · United Kingdom

A perpetual closed at a profit, line by line
Realised profit on the position£1,000
Funding paid while it was open−£60
Net result£940

HashBooks reports the figures in pounds; derivatives can be taxed differently from coins, so have an adviser check them. The full example in the help centre.

Realised profit on the position₹80,000
Funding paid while it was open−₹5,000

  • Selling, swapping or spending what you hold on Backpack. Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a capital gain or loss: short-term at 10–37% if held a year or less, 0, 15 or 20% if held longer. More on Backpack in United States
  • Futures and perpetuals on Backpack. Closing a futures or perpetual position realises a gain or loss, and funding you pay or receive moves your result too. HashBooks records both in dollars on the day. More on Backpack in United States

Backpack specifics.

  • The Read Only option restricts the key to view-only access.
  • The Public Key field can be left blank for most users.
  • Backpack offers spot, margin and perpetual swaps. Closed positions and funding payments are imported alongside spot trades, so the report shows your whole result on the platform.

Questions

Backpack, answered.

Does Backpack report my trades to the tax office?

Reporting depends on where Backpack is regulated and where you live, so don’t rely on it. Your return has to include every sale and swap across all your platforms, which is what HashBooks brings together.

How are Backpack futures and perpetuals taxed?

Closing a position realises a gain or loss, and funding you pay or receive adds to or reduces your result. HashBooks imports both from Backpack and reports them under your country’s rules; the tax section above shows how your country treats them.

Does HashBooks need trading permission on Backpack?

No. Create the Backpack key with read access only and leave trading and withdrawals off. HashBooks has no code that can trade or withdraw, and the key is encrypted with AES-256-GCM and deleted when you disconnect.

How do I get my Backpack transaction history for taxes?

Connect Backpack with a read-only API key and HashBooks pulls the history for you. You can also export a statement from Backpack and upload it with the HashBooks template.

Which HashBooks plan do I need for Backpack?

Connecting Backpack and seeing an estimated tax summary is free for up to 100 transactions across 3 connections. Filing reports for your country start on the Starter plan; see pricing.

Can HashBooks trade or withdraw on Backpack?

No. The key you create is view-only, and HashBooks contains no code that can trade, withdraw or transfer. It’s encrypted with AES-256-GCM and deleted the moment you remove Backpack.
