How to connect
Bitso, step by step.
Pick the method that suits you — both land in the same ledger. Stuck? See connecting accounts in the help centre.
- Turn on two-factor authentication under Profile > Security > Account security in the Bitso web app.
- Log in to the Bitso web app, hover over your name and choose Profile.
- Select API from the left-hand bar.
- On the API Setup page, click Add new API key. Accept any security warning and continue.
- Name the key. Optionally turn on Restrict use of API addresses and add up to five IP addresses.
- Under the permissions, keep View balances and View account information ticked. Leave Place orders, Perform security actions and Make withdrawals unticked.
- Click Add new API key to save, then enter your 2FA token.
- Store the API key and secret somewhere safe. The secret is shown only once.
- Click Go back to API setup to view the new key.
- In HashBooks, choose Bitso under Integrations and paste the key and secret.
- Download your trade, deposit and withdrawal history from Bitso.
- Copy the rows into the HashBooks CSV / Excel template: date, type, what you sent and received, the fee, and any TDS.
- Upload it in HashBooks, check the preview, then confirm. Uploading the same file twice never double-counts.

Worked example
The numbers, worked through.
A typical Bitso sale, taxed the way your country does it. The figures are illustrative; HashBooks works out yours from your own history.
Illustrative · United States
| Proceeds | $3,500 |
|---|---|
| Cost basis (FIFO) | −$2,000 |
| Long-term gain | $1,500 |
| Tax at the 15% long-term rate | $225 |
Held a year or less, the same gain would be taxed at your ordinary rate, for example 22%: $330. The full example in the help centre.
Illustrative · United Kingdom
| Net gain | £20,000 |
|---|---|
| Less the annual exempt amount | −£3,000 |
| Taxable gain | £17,000 |
| £10,270 in the basic-rate band × 18% | £1,848.60 |
| Remaining £6,730 × 24% | £1,615.20 |
| Capital Gains Tax | £3,463.80 |
Your salary decides how much of the gain falls in the 18% band. The full example in the help centre.
Illustrative · India
| Sale value | ₹1,50,000 |
|---|---|
| Cost of acquisition | −₹1,00,000 |
| Gain (the ₹500 fee isn’t deductible) | ₹50,000 |
| Tax at 30% | ₹15,000 |
| Cess at 4% | ₹600 |
| Total tax | ₹15,600 |
| Less 1% TDS already deducted | −₹1,500 |
| Balance at filing | ₹14,100 |
A loss on another coin wouldn’t reduce this: VDA losses can’t be set off. The full example in the help centre.

- Two-step verification must be turned on before an API key can be created.
- An account can have up to six API keys.
- The permission categories are Place orders, View balances, View account information, Perform security actions and Make withdrawals.

Connect Bitso with a read-only API key and HashBooks pulls the history for you. You can also export a statement from Bitso and upload it with the HashBooks template.
