Worked example
How the tax adds up.
A Bitstamp position, with the tax shown for the country you picked. The numbers are for illustration only; yours come from your own history.
Illustrative · United States
| Realised profit on the position | $1,200 |
|---|---|
| Funding paid while it was open | −$80 |
| Net result | $1,120 |
| At a 22% ordinary rate if short-term | $246.40 |
Rates depend on how the contract is treated; check yours with a tax professional. The full example in the help centre.
Illustrative · United Kingdom
| Realised profit on the position | £1,000 |
|---|---|
| Funding paid while it was open | −£60 |
| Net result | £940 |

Illustrative · India

|---|---|
| Funding paid while it was open | −₹5,000 |
| Net result | ₹75,000 |

Your country
What your Bitstamp activity means at tax time.
Pick where you file and the rules below follow. Each one has a longer write-up in the HashBooks help centre.
United States · Form 8949
- Selling, swapping or spending what you hold on Bitstamp. Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a capital gain or loss: short-term at 10–37% if held a year or less, 0, 15 or 20% if held longer. More on Bitstamp in United States
- Futures and perpetuals on Bitstamp. Closing a futures or perpetual position realises a gain or loss, and funding you pay or receive moves your result too. HashBooks records both in dollars on the day. More on Bitstamp in United States
- Rewards and interest from Bitstamp. Staking rewards, interest and other rewards are ordinary income at their dollar value when received; that value becomes their cost basis. More on Bitstamp in United States
- Moving coins to or from Bitstamp. Moving crypto between your own wallets and accounts isn’t taxable. More on Bitstamp in United States
- Cost basis. Since 1 January 2025 cost basis is tracked per wallet or exchange; HashBooks uses FIFO, lot by lot. More on Bitstamp in United States

Pick the method that suits you — both land in the same ledger. Stuck? See connecting accounts in the help centre.
- Sign in to Bitstamp and open its API management page.
- Create a new API key and enable read (view-only) permission only. Leave trading and withdrawals switched off.
- In HashBooks, choose Bitstamp under Integrations and paste the API key and secret.
- HashBooks syncs your full history and keeps it up to date.
- Download your trade, deposit and withdrawal history from Bitstamp.
- Copy the rows into the HashBooks CSV / Excel template: date, type, what you sent and received, the fee, and any TDS.
- Upload it in HashBooks, check the preview, then confirm. Uploading the same file twice never double-counts.

Good to know
Bitstamp specifics.
- Bitstamp’s API doesn’t return your deposits. Add them from a statement if they matter for your cost basis.
- Bitstamp’s ledger comes across too, so rewards, interest and other credits paid into the account are recorded as income on the day they arrive.
- HashBooks prepares your report for the country where you file, not where Bitstamp is based, so gains on Bitstamp follow your own country’s rules.
- Bitstamp offers spot and perpetual swaps. Closed positions and funding payments are imported alongside spot trades, so the report shows your whole result on the platform.

Questions
Bitstamp, answered.
Does Bitstamp report my trades to the tax office?
Reporting depends on where Bitstamp is regulated and where you live, so don’t rely on it. Your return has to include every sale and swap across all your platforms, which is what HashBooks brings together.
How are Bitstamp futures and perpetuals taxed?
Closing a position realises a gain or loss, and funding you pay or receive adds to or reduces your result. HashBooks imports both from Bitstamp and reports them under your country’s rules; the tax section above shows how your country treats them.
Does HashBooks need trading permission on Bitstamp?
No. Create the Bitstamp key with read access only and leave trading and withdrawals off. HashBooks has no code that can trade or withdraw, and the key is encrypted with AES-256-GCM and deleted when you disconnect.
How do I get my Bitstamp transaction history for taxes?
Connect Bitstamp with a read-only API key and HashBooks pulls the history for you. You can also export a statement from Bitstamp and upload it with the HashBooks template.
Which HashBooks plan do I need for Bitstamp?
Connecting Bitstamp and seeing an estimated tax summary is free for up to 100 transactions across 3 connections. Filing reports for your country start on the Starter plan; see pricing.
Can HashBooks trade or withdraw on Bitstamp?
No. The key you create is view-only, and HashBooks contains no code that can trade, withdraw or transfer. It’s encrypted with AES-256-GCM and deleted the moment you remove Bitstamp.
